In Mac OS X system, many applications shortcuts contains the ⌥ symbols, the ⌥ symbols  actually refers to the keys on the keyboard. I believe that many people can not remember each time the ⌥ symbol, in fact, means choice, like the train in this picture below, you can choose to go straight or turn. When the next time you forget ⌥ symbol, Think, This train, I believe we will never confuse ⌥ symbol.
